Allow us to tell you about the Maritime Dance Academy. We have been in business for the past 27 years and hold classes in Tap, Jazz, Ballet ,Modern and Hip Hop. We start children dancing at the age of 3 and offer classes right up to adult levels. Our philosophy at Maritime Dance is to provide a rewarding dance experience for all our students irregardless of talent level. Our programs have been developed to allow each individual to maximize their potential as a dancer in an always positive and supportive environment.

We feel it is very important for children to be well rounded in dance. Therefore, we start the 3 and 4 year olds off early with a combination class all three styles in a 50 minute class. This exposes the children to all styles of music and dance:
Ballet - Classical for 20 minutes
Jazz - Barney, Disney etc. for 15 minutes
Tap - Broadway for 15 minutes.
The young dancers continue with the combination classes until they graduate to the Intensive Training Program about age 8.

Our students study from September until June. Our recitals are held at the Dalhousie Arts Centre/Rebecca Cohn auditorium, this marks the end of our program schedule. All of our students participate in the recital and it is the highlight of the year for dancers, family and staff alike. There is a wonderful feeling of accomplishment and pride that comes from performing on stage what you have learned before family and friends.

As our dancers progress through the levels they graduate to our  Intensive Training Program. This program allows dancers to develop their skills by taking individual classes in the various disciplines. This program also allows dancers to focus their efforts on areas of dance they prefer. In the ITP program there are many opportunities to perform in public and for peers in the annual school tour.

As part of the Intensive Training Program we have established a performance troupe called Rising Stars that gives the dancers additional opportunities for performing. Our senior ITP dancers have the opportunity to audition and perform with Maritime Dance Performance Group which is one of the premier amateur dance companies in the Maritimes.

Maritime Dance Academy believes that being a positive force in the community is very important part of our program. Our dancers regularly perform at senior citizens homes, Christmas Daddies shows, and The Heart and Stroke Foundation as well as participate in collection of food donations for Feed Nova Scotia.
